Despise Design, a project-based collective of 14 designers, specialices in engaging with design fairs to facilitate critical dialogues. By proposing discussions, through exhibitions,  interviews and social media, they challenge established conventions and scrutinise the influence of design fairs on shaping the industry.

Statement:
✸ Creativity and innovation, and a special attention to sustainability. The next ‘good design’ in display. Here lays the recurring promise for better futures, held by the most renown European design fair.
Every year, they open doors to long queues of lumbering positivity, excessive self-confidence, and exclusive rhetoric. For whatever sells the best. ✸ We don’t bite the treat, we won’t drink any pre-paid drink. We are exhausted by the cost, the big names and the fraud. Out of faith in design, we ask; How did we come here, and where do designers go next?

A spatial installation that

serves as platform for discussion and reflection throuh a series
of conversation.

The 61st edition of Salone del Mobile marks a new focus on the people, with a very sustainable approach. The logistics of this approach come down to the productive conditions of the fair: the grayscale of self-exploitation and expectancy, and the madness of constant contradictions within. With faith in design, and with the designer being at stake, the ‘Despise Design’ group* is ready to not-compromise or negotiate the terms of participating at a design fair. Less than panel discussions, and more like debates over sharing drinks and lollipops, with the ‘How did we get here?’ program, the group will welcome guests (and their guests), to discharge doubts and questions about the condition of the designer exhibited.

Within the overall installation, the concept of precarity is welcomed and embraced; materials that are often hidden away or discarded have a place. Rather than being relegated to the background, moving boxes, bubble wrap, strapping materials, transparent painter's cloth, and moving blankets take on a central role in creating this dynamic setting for designers to gather. The installation is extended day by day, emphasising the process over the destination.

A group exhibition that harvests the pulverised essence of design events, revealing the darker facets of design celebrations. Through symbolic lessons in Pride, Sloth, Wrath, Envy, Greed, Lust, and Gluttony, it presents the sinful side of design.
